Urban buildings hold enormous potential. The question is how to harness it wisely, sustainably, and for the benefit of people. This was the focus of the kickoff event for the SAM-SUD project—Smart Asset Management for Sustainable Urban Development—held on October 24. The project is being implemented by Creative Industry Košice in collaboration with the City of Košice and other partners from the fields of technology, research, and practice.

The event opened a discussion on how cities can better manage their assets—with the help of data, modern technologies, and active collaboration with communities. The SAM-SUD project introduces new tools for decision-making regarding the use of public buildings, including a digital twin of the city, NextUse AI, and the creation of an Asset Management Unit designed to support long-term and strategic planning.

The meeting also included a visit to the pilot building at Hlavná 57, which is becoming the first visible example of what the integration of data, participation, and real urban space can look like. Discussions within the Living Lab opened up the topic of the future functioning of a multifunctional urban hub and the possibilities for involving the creative sector, small and medium-sized organizations, and non-profit initiatives.

In the coming years, the SAM-SUD project will explore ways to make the management of city assets more efficient, transparent, and closer to the people. The kick-off event, featuring a tour of the unused building, thus symbolically launched a process whose results will gradually become visible in the city’s everyday life.

The project is co-financed by the European Union.
